2002 Puerto Vallarta
Arriba va!

For 2002, we passed on the traditional summer vacation (though Heidi and Luke went to violin camp and Rudy and I did Las Vegas and Phoenix) and blew the wad on a nice Christmas vacation. It was the first time we celebrated Christmas without the trappings of a tree, stacks of presents, or snow. Truth be told, it was very nice!

Hurry up and snap the photo. The lunch buffet opens in five minutes!

Here we are, poolside, at the Viva Vallarta. If you look close you can see our room. It was the bottom room at the far left of the complex. It looked over the pool and had a prime ocean view. But it was here at the pool where we frequently saw two of our best resort hosts: Javier and Jorge. They were the ones bringing us Sexo en la Playa or Rum Punch at twenty-minute intervals whether we were poolside or on the beach!

Mister, when do we get our 10 pesos?

This was the view from our room (I don't know who those two street urchins were who snuck into the photo) though we didn't spend a whole lot of time there except to watch SpongeBob SquarePants in Spanish ("Bob Esponga").

Rudy: What's Luke doing in this picture? He had nothing to do with the sand castle!

Many hours were spent on the beach. Here is a view from the beach with part of the resort in the background.

I'm freezing!

Water soccer was popular. Here is Luke attentively protecting the goal.

In the pool! In the pool!

Here is Luke posing with one of the activities staffers, Rubin. He was a great guy. In addition to officiating over the poolside BINGO game ("People, you have to respect our rules. You gotta know how to swim if you're gonna play BINGO here.") he was one of the nightly show's performers and a dance instructor. Rubin was also funny when he was joking; he would say, "hey, I'm not joking, I'm working here." Maybe you had to be there.

Ho, Ho, Ho ... watch your feet while I'm backing up!

We were in Mexico over Christmas and while Christmas Eve was a spiritual day with the live nativity scene and the midnight mass, on Christmas Day "Papa Noel" cruised poolside in his ATV and had a gift for each of the kids. On the right, you also see the other activity staffer who made our trip so nice, Ramon.

Wait, I see another grasshopper I'm going to swat!

We played some tennis. Here's Rudy looking like he knows what he's doing.

Luke: Rudy, how's the tequila?

On one of the days, we took a city trip and then a nice ride down to the Mismaloya area. Here is a photo from our stop at a small tequila distillery.
